Algeria bears a « historical responsibility » in the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, given its proven involvement in the creation and perpetuation of this artificial conflict, said the Rwandan expert in geopolitics, Dr. Ismael Buchanan.

« Algeria’s involvement has been obvious on the diplomatic, legal, financial and military fronts since the birth of this regional conflict, » said Buchanan, also a professor of political science at the University of Rwanda (UR) in a statement to MAP on the sidelines of a regional seminar held Saturday in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. « Algerian diplomacy openly supports the polisario by prioritizing this issue in its foreign policy, » he noted, stressing that this « unwavering sponsorship » makes Algeria an actual party in this artificial conflict. « It is clear that the polisario owes its survival to Algeria, which supports it. » The UN Secretary-General reports, together with the Security Council’s latest resolutions, consider that Algeria is a party to the conflict, bearing an indisputable responsibility, Buchanan went on to say, concluding that Morocco’s autonomy plan for its southern provinces will remain the only realistic solution to this long-lasting dispute.
